info on revolutionary soldiers?
Does anybody know where i can get info on an Revolutionary soldier? I have an ancestor who fought in that war… Shadrach Doty born 9/18/1763 died sometime after 1805.Do they have records of what batallion they served in or ….something.
Just go here (if you haven’t already): http://books.google.com/books?id=PR9KAAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=The+Doty-Doten+family+in+America+:+descendants+of+Edward+Doty,+an+emigrant+by+the+Mayflower,+1620&as_brr=1&ei=TaFFSvmtIY2mM7n0hLwO
Hope this may help. Shad is listed as descendant #9475, on page 658, as a Rev. War soldier.
Have a blast with the info. As for battalion, records are spotty, but most of mine have also shown up from doing searches at http://www.books.google.com
Ancestry.com shows him appearing as a Private in the Connecticut militia. Since the lineage is attached to the arrival of the Mayflower, you’ve got quite a field to harvest.

In Revolutionary War research, it helps to know if the ancestor fought for the Union or the Confederacy and a general location of where that ancestor might have enlisted as some soldiers were know to change sides just because the food was better!
That being said, NARA has Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files if your ancestor or his widow lived long enough to collect these benefits. Heritage Quest which you can get free access to at your public library also has most if not all of these records and you can access them for free. Footnote.com also has many of these records. I happen to have a subscription to Footnote and I was able to find a mention of Shadrack Doty in Artemis Day’s Pension File. It said that he[Shadrack] drew pension on #94,534 and that he is believed to be from Munroe, NY. Shadrack Doty apparently fought with Artemus Day in the Glochester Co., NJ Militia.
Hope this helps.

yes, there are ample files for Revolutionary soldiers. Daughters of the Amer. Revolution is one place that you can get help with this.
Friendly tip.. be sure that you have ample documentation (aside from Rev. service) concerning the specific ancestor. The reason.. you MUST know that your guy is the one born 1763 and married so-and-so, so there is some means to match your info to the person in the file. In many cases, there are several soldiers of the same names.

Shadrach was listed as a property owner in 1799 in Whitehall, Washington County, NY. Also, he is listed in Index of the Rolls of Honor (Ancestor’s Index) in the Lineage Books of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Vol. IV
