Medic or infantry? enlisting in 2 weeks!?

i am deciding whether I should go into infantry or be a medic [69w]. my recruiter told me that a medic has the best chance of going into special forces in the future, is this true? also, he said that he will attach me to an infantry batallion as a medic. my question is, would I still get to kick down doors with the infantry or no? he said that i will be in the fight of saving soldiers lives and not fighting the war. If i enlist as a medic for the infantry, what should I be expecting? thanks in advance, enlisting in 2 weeks!! please help

My husband is a 68w and he was a line medic for an infantry unit (currently an aid station medic in the infantry unit). As far as if you will be kicking down doors that really depends, most of the time they want to protect the medic since your their life line. Also you could end up being an evac medic or an aid station medic if your attached to an infantry unit. My husband has deployed twice and has never had to fire his weapon, not to say the guys around him haven’t but he’s been more concerned about the men around him. You can go for Special forces, I know its extremely hard to get into it. I have met a lot of medics who have gone through and have not made the grade. If you want to kick down doors then infantry is your best bet, also they promote ALOT fast then medics, just last month the points for an E-6 was a 200 point difference. However, medic is a great career starter if your looking for something you could take outside the military. Lots to think about :)

  1. If your long-term goal is Special Forces, I’d recommend you begin with medic and endeavor to gain your promotion to SGT as soon as possible. You should also begin studying a foreign language, unless you already speak one.

Bottom line is enlist, then after a couple years, begin your SF packet. And never turn down opportunities for the Army to pay for advanced education. SF is a "thinking man’s branch."

The best way you can serve your comrades in arms as a medic is not to kick doors down, but to be prepared to treat their wounds if that opportunity arises.

You should also know that the tactics that are wining this war in Iraq for us is not "door kicking" but in the winning of hearts and minds of the Iraqi people. A medic has many skills that will enable this national objective.

  3. I dont honestly think your recruiter can attach you to any particular unit, it is just the luck of the draw. (if he says that it can only be true if it is in your actual enlistment contract)
I am a female medic in the army. I belong to a support battalion but i spent 9 months in iraq "attached" to a line unit, working in the aid station. It was great for me because i got to deal with traumatic injuries and learned alot, but only had to go out on missions or clps like once or twice a week. Once again, all depends where you get placed. Being a medic is definitely awesome though, if you’re smart and confident go for it! Infantry guys seem to love what they do to, so i dunno, just wanted to give my 2 cents.
