Photographing your new baby

Babies are notoriously difficult to photograph. Luckily, they usually don’t complain too much (at least not the newborns) if you decide to take a couple hundred shots.

First, get close! Newborns are typically pretty covered up, so you won’t get much of them besides their face. Take advantage, and get some great close-ups of the face. Try different angles and get down on the floor with them. But don’t forget friends and family, who may be holding the baby and can add great context to your photo.

Second, keep the camera on-hand at all times! You’ve probably discovered babies don’t spend all their time smiling–in fact, very little of it. Keep your camera handy for those fleeing moments!

And finally, look at other photos with a skeptical eye. The babies on most sites (even casual snapshot-sharing sites like Flickr or Picasa) have been airbrushed. Do the same, or love your baby for how he really is, but accept perfection doesn’t come in any package.

And don’t forget to utilize a professional portrait photographer from time to time as well. Nothing helps like a fresh eye!
