It replaces the BBS (Brigade Battalion Battle Simulation) system. Based on its advanced simulation technology, it will make it possible to reduce the size of the personnel required for headquarters exercises by more than 50%, while making these exercises more realistic and matching the complexity of current conflicts. SCIPIO was developed by MASA Group in cooperation with Thales Land & Joint, which was responsible for the GUI and the integration with the French Army SIC (système d’information et de commandement, aka C2 system).

The 280 MM Gun at the Nevada Proving Ground

The first artillery test was on May 25, 1953 at the Nevada Test Site. Fired as part of Operation Upshot-Knothole and codenamed Shot GRABLE, a 280 mm (11 inch) shell with a gun-type fission warhead was fired 10,000 m (6.2 miles) and detonated 160 m (525 ft) above the ground with an estimated yield of 15 kilotons. This was the only nuclear artillery shell ever actually fired in the US test program. The shell was 1384 mm (4.5 ft) long and weighed 365 kg (805 lb); it was fired from a special artillery piece, nicknamed “Atomic Annie”, built by the Artillery Test Unit of Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Around 3,200 personnel were present. The warhead was designated the W9 and 80 were produced from 1952-53 for the T-124 shell. It was retired in 1957.

This video features Trumpet Sargent Warren Patterson on Trombone playing – Papua . This is the final part uploads from my recording from BFBS ( British Forces Broadcasting Service) Radio “In Step” programme Germany with Uncle Bill doing the commentary sounding very British and BBC!
The transmission went out on Saturday Lunchtimes and featured different military bands serving in West Germany each week.
Dad was a friend of Peter Parsons Band Master and I had many lessons from Roy Warne – Trumpet – who features on the next video with “High on a Hill”
My father served with the Queens Own Buffs ( now Princess of Wales) and was attached to the 2nd Royal Anglican Regiment in 1970.
Anyone known to be in the bands let me know as I have found memories as a school boy of the the time in Munster Germany at School there.
I used to play in the school orchestra playing Trumpet.
The recoding was done on a Philips single speed mono machine from a FM signal. The Tape recorder was sold recently fully working on ebay as I now have the one in the Video.
